Etienne Fang in Monrovia, Liberia interviewing and photographing women.
“Etienne’s beautiful questions prompt us to investigate our own hopes, dreams, and desires as women in the context of our own complex lives and in our human times. We become ethnographers alongside Etienne, anthropologists of our own essence as we mine our own wisdom and take away new insights.”
Just before the pandemic hit, I wrapped up a whirlwind year. I set out to learn what “having it all” means to real women today in order to redefine it. The choices and trade-offs that I, and all women, make regarding our work, life, and love is a topic that has been deeply personal to me.
I traveled to twelve countries in twelve months, interviewing and photographing over a hundred women in Singapore, Myanmar, India, Mexico, Italy, Uruguay, Argentina, Sweden, The Netherlands, England, Liberia, and the United States. Prior to my global exploration, I had spent the last five years collecting stories and insights from the women in my own life.
I have uncovered seven pillars in my search for a new definition of what it means for women to have it all. Seeing through the eyes of real women allows us to see ourselves in a new light. It enables us to:
Develop perspective through the experiences of diverse women around the world
Reflect on what is important to us
Go beyond the expectations we put upon ourselves
Challenge our own stereotypes and limiting beliefs
Bring perspective to our quest for wholeness as women
I embarked on this journey hoping to be changed. And indeed, I am. Now you can be too. Enjoy!
“These reflections have been nothing short of a marvelous gift of growth, deep understanding, and connection to myself in my personal journey. I recommend these lessons to anyone looking to create the change they want in their life and want to deepen their connection to themselves at the same time.”
